Press Release

Summerside experiencing unprecedented growth with an increase in development

SUMMERSIDE, PE – The City of Summerside is seeing a significant boost in development across its city so far this year, with signs pointing to a record year in construction and new projects. The City’s Technical Services department, which oversees planning and engineering services, issued $27.4 million in building permits in the month of May alone, bringing the year-todate total to over $46.9 million.

“It is an exciting time to be in Summerside! People and business are bullish about the future of our growing City by the Sea. Growth like this brings new challenges we haven’t faced in decades, but it also brings incredible opportunities for the future of our city and the people we share it with.” Kutcher continued, “It is always better to be managing the pressures of growth, than those of decline. The significant developments in the residential and commercial sectors across Summerside again this year show high levels of confidence in the vibrancy in our local economy now and for the future. Also, with over 191 housing starts this year alone Summerside is on pace to start building more residential units than ever before – bucking the provincial trend of a slowdown in housing starts.” — Mayor Dan Kutcher.

For context, the annual building permit averages for the city of Summerside from 2017—2022 was approximately $42 million, and by comparison, the current 2023 permits are sitting at $46.9 since January 1st, indicating a banner development year for the City of Summerside.

“It’s a busy time for our team managing the high volumes of development requests not only for projects getting underway but for the many on the horizon in our city. Our department prides itself on delivering efficient and creative support to developers. I am proud of our team who have managed this ongoing volume of development over the last number of months with no signs of things slowing in the months ahead” commented Director of Technical Services, Aaron MacDonald.

As this unprecedented development continues, the City of Summerside encourages those seeking development opportunities and permits to reach out to our Technical Services Department and provide as much time as possible to ensure a seamless experience developing in our city.
