SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — One of Summerside’s most prolific employers is gearing up for another significant expansion.

IO Solutions Inc., a call-centre company that does remote support for some of Canada’s biggest telecommunications companies, currently employs 800 people in P.E.I., split between offices in Alberton, Summerside and Charlottetown, and is looking to add another 200 people to its local payroll.

Most of the company’s current employees work in the Summerside area, either from home or at its offices at 56 Central St.

Jade Chebli, vice president of operations and co-founder of IO Solutions, said the company is happy with its investment in P.E.I. and hopes to be here for a long time to come.

“It's been so good, the quality of the labour here in P.E.I.,” said Chebli. “For us, it's amazing doing business here on the Island.”

The company is moving ahead with the hiring binge because demand from its major clients is strong, he added.

IO Solutions has a relatively small physical footprint in the community, so it might not be the most visible company, but its contribution to the local economy is significant, said Chebli.

“I talk to a lot of people (who say), ‘we don’t know who you are.’ But if you look at the pool of employees that we employ, if you’re looking (at) the salaries, the contribution that it gives to either the communities or the Island (as a whole) … it’s quite considerable. So, we have a lot more to offer.”

“Like we said when we opened the first (office) in Alberton, we’re not here to just come and go. We’re here to stay,” he added.

Originally founded in Montreal, Que., IO Solutions opened its first office in P.E.I. nearly a decade ago in Bloomfield. In 2016 it became the primary tenant at 56 Central St. when the City of Summerside purchased the building and turned it into a business centre. The company has since purchased that building from the city and subsequently opened a third office in Charlottetown.

Mike Thususka, Summerside’s director of business development, has worked closely with IO Solutions for several years and said the company’s continued investment in the community is good news for the local economy.

“Overall, IO Solutions is one of our leading information technology sector companies and brings a wealth of opportunity and growth to our business community, has a significant impact on our local economy in terms of spin-off activity and has a large payroll that provides significant direct spending impact to our local business community,” said Thususka.
